Battle Born Ventures LLC (BBV) contracted with Nichols Consulting Engineers of Reno, Nevada to provide pre-construction surveying and mapping and construction staking services associated with the City of Fernley’s Comstock Drive & Mortensen Lane Drainage Improvement & Rehabilitation Project, Fernley, Nevada. The project consisted of storm drain infrastructure improvements, roadway re-grading and resurfacing, curb & gutter improvements, and driveway apron construction for two residential streets, approximately 3,900 L.F., along with significant improvements to the city’s storm drainage system.
Prior to design and compilation of improvement plans, BBV surveyors performed a topographic survey of the project site and proposed pipeline routes. BBV researched record information pertaining to roadway right-of-ways and property boundaries associated with the project site and incorporated the boundary information into the topographic survey. This information was used as the project base map and the basis for design of the proposed improvements. BBV used the base map to prepare legal descriptions and exhibit figures for proposed utility and construction easement agreements. Upon completion of design and approval of the improvement plans, BBV surveyors staked the horizontal position of proposed improvements with offset and line stakes set at angle points, grade breaks, radius points, begin and end of curves, and points on line not to exceed 50’ increments on tangent runs and 25’ increments on curves utilizing a Trimble R8 RTK Receiver. Stakes were then graded to the nearest one hundredth of a foot of the proposed finished grade elevations utilizing differential leveling to minimize discrepancies in elevation that can often be introduced when using GPS to establish hub elevations. BBV also provided construction benchmarks set adjacent to the project site for use during construction and grading operations. BBV compiled the staking information into cut sheets which were delivered via email to the contractor’s site foreman.
During construction, the contractor, A&K Earth Movers, Inc., destroyed four centerline survey monuments. A&K contracted with BBV to set the positions of the destroyed monuments to facilitate installation of new monuments and monument wells. BBV surveyors stamped and punched the newly constructed monuments and prepared and filed the required corner records with Lyon County.
